They were also the first country to legalize gay marriages. So yes, Denmark is the best place for same-sex marriages.
History of LGBTQ Rights in Denmark
Denmark has been a nation of changes. Danes have long forgotten the old ways of life and most of them are liberals that believe in rapid evolution. In 1933 where people everywhere else in the world were busy shaming homosexuality – sexual activity between non-binary individuals got decriminalized. Furthermore, as early as 1948 Gay rights organizations like LGBT Danmark were making strides in the country. The founders of the organization Alex Axgil and Eigil Axgil were the first gay couple in the world to entered a registered partnership in 1989.
The Copenhagen Pride is the largest annual festival for LGBTQ people. In 2017, 25,000 people took part in the parade, and more than 300,000 people were out in the streets to experience it. The Copenhagen Pride parade marks its beginning in the year 1996.
Although, non-binary unions had no less status than actual marriages. It was only in 2012 where people could actually get married in a church legally.
In 2014 Denmark also legalized gender change without a person having to go through any surgical changes. And finally, in 2017 being transgender was no longer on the list of mental illnesses – which finally allowed easy access to hormonal treatment and surgery without having to get a clearance from the doctor.
We’re a LGBTQ couple but we are not Danish – is it possible for us to get married?
Yes, the great thing about the marriage laws in Denmark is there’s no differentiation between heterosexual and LGBTQ couples. Marriage here is between two individuals, with not much emphasis on the color, nationality, sex, gender, and religion of the persons involved.

Your marriage here would be private. Nobody can access the Danish records, as they are confidential. Subsequently, if you wish to register your marriage in the country of residence – you’d definitely need to inform your local authorities.
